Welcome to The Nerd’s Corner–for nerds, by nerds! We’re so excited to bring you the newest column here within the pages of The Loafer! Here we’ll get you up to speed each article with the newest information on what’s happening within the world of geekdom, spiced up just a bit with our own thoughts and personal experiences. From collectibles to video games, comic conventions to cosplay, and everything in between, we’ll take you along into our wonderful world of pop culture.
No doubt, many of you are probably a little upset and asking, “What about your other column?” Well there’s no need to fret, because Appalachian Wanderers is here to stay as well. We absolutely love traveling the towns and hills of East Tennessee and bringing you guys along for the ride. Appalachian Wanderers has been such a joy to write, and we love all our loyal readers. Thanks again to all those who’ve sent us such encouraging letters as well. Can you believe we’re already about to hit our 100th issue?
Since we’re rapidly approaching Appalachian Wanderer’s two-year anniversary, we decided to change things up a bit to keep it fresh. We’ll still be bringing you the articles you’ve grown to love as we continue to explore the Southern Appalachians and beyond. This year we have some great things in store. Future trips are already planned for the Natchez Trace Parkway, lots of state parks, and at least one national park (hopefully Shenandoah!) We’re also excited to check out the Tennessee and North Carolina state natural area system, smaller and often overlooked parks aimed at protecting every unique habitat found in the area’s varied geography.
Just because we’re outdoor enthusiasts doesn’t mean we can’t be huge nerds too! That’s why every couple of weeks, we’ll be trading in our hiking boots for comic books and our cameras for action figures. The Nerd’s Corner will switch places with Appalachian Wanderers from time to time so we can keep you up to date on the latest thing happening in the giant world of “nerddom”. Whether you enjoy reading comic books, collecting Funko POPs, or watching the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’ll want to check in each and every article as we release our inner fanboy.
Bringing you the newest updates won’t always be the focus, though. Some weeks you might tag along with us as we visit one of the area’s awesome comic cons. On others, you might think you’re in history class as you learn all about the creation of the earliest model trains. Local comic book shops, cosplay tips, collectibles, gaming systems, toy fairs, these are just a few of the topics you’ll be sure to find in the future, so stay tuned!
We got the idea for this column due to our numerous hobbies and multiple fandoms. Jason is fixated with everything 80’s! Gremlins, Goonies, and Ghostbusters are favorites, and he must have every single Funko POP related to those characters. Don’t even mention Masters of the Universe and Zelda, or you’ll find yourself trapped in an hour-long conversation before you know it. Spider-Man and Deadpool are some comic characters he can’t get enough of. Disney pins, TY Beanie Babies, and Garbage Pail Kids have all been obsessions at some point, and you can bet theirs another collectible he’ll want soon enough. Daniel is Marvel’s biggest fan (and spender). Next time Captain America is set to show up in a new movie, you can bet he’ll be standing in line hours early on opening night. POPS, Dorbz, Legends action figures, comic books, he wants it all! He’s just getting into cosplay too, with that Doctor Strange cape still a mess at the moment. Retro games, DC, Pokémon, Star Wars, and anime are all fun diversions, but he always comes back to Marvel.
Hopefully you’ve read something that makes you look forward to our future articles! Each one will be unique and showcase a fun new corner of fan culture. Just like with Appalachian Wanderers, we would love to hear your input as well. If you have any ideas or would like to suggest a topic we haven’t covered yet, be sure to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to seeing you again next week!
