My fiancé Mekesha and I started our idea of a meal prep business in June 2017. As it began to quickly grow over the next couple of months Warrior Strong Fitness was born. Our passion for fitness and love of the culinary arts laid the foundation and we were eager to share that with everyone.
Growing up playing sports, predominantly football, played a huge role in my life and I feel like it shaped who I am today. The dedication and preparation required off the field is so vast that when applying it to other areas of my life it seemed like an easy task. After college I played football with a few minor league teams in Tennessee and Virginia and when my playing days were over I felt like I needed something to fill that void. I accepted my first full time teaching and coaching position in Carter County in 2009, teaching physical education and weightlifting and coaching football and basketball. It was a dream come true, but I was hungry for more. I went back for my M. Ed in Administration and Supervision and the next year for my Ed. S (Educational Specialist) degree. During all of this I was studying to become certified in Sports Nutrition and Personal Training on the side.
Fast forward 9 years and 2 kids (Briley and Aislynn) later I find myself hungry again for more competition. I began feeling like I had let myself go a little bit as I started getting older, as much of us tend to do with busy lives and hectic schedules. Working long hours being a teacher and a coach, I found myself always making excuses to why I was skipping the gym or why I was going through another drive through. So, when I stepped on a scale at 235 lbs. (the heaviest I had ever been), I decided from that point I was going to make a change, I was going to apply that discipline and dedication that I stressed so heavily to my football players to my own life and see where it took me. So, with this new goal in mind, I had to have something to work towards, a specific goal. As I was reading a Muscle and Fitness magazine I came across a contest called the Rock Hard Challenge. The contest was to showcase people who had incredible body transformations. The contestant who had to most significant body transformation over a period of 60 days was the winner. With my knowledge of fitness and nutrition I thought this was the perfect contest for me. Sixty days later, I drop 35lbs, won the contest and got featured in Muscle and Fitness magazine, which was one of the top things on my bucket list. During the contest, as I’m constantly monitoring my goals and adjusting my macronutrients to specifically fit my needs, I began to think, this is the type of service that a lot of people could really benefit from. So, taking that a step further really Mekesha and I wanted to gauge the interest of the public and see if the demand was there. The feedback we got was phenomenal! We gave it a week to go out and do some research and see what we could come up with and found that no one in this area was doing anything like this, so it gave us the opportunity to try and corner the market. The first week that we started we cooked 250 meals and from that point on we knew that we had something to build on.
Our goal with the business is to show everyone that eating “healthy” doesn’t have to be so boring. We try to make everyone’s favorite foods (wings, burgers, tacos, etc.) into healthier options that still have all the great flavor that you get from their counter parts. For instance, when we cook buffalo chicken we use lean breast meat instead of wings.
For burgers, we use a much highergrade ground sirloin (93/7) instead of an 80/20 blend, and for our tacos we leave off the tortilla and use seasoned ground turkey. The convenience of the meals has been a major factor for most of our clients. Instead of running through a drive through full of processed foods or having to come home and cook dinner after a long day of work, they simply pop a meal in the microwave and they are ready to go. There’s never any question of what they are eating, and each meal has already been pre-portioned, weighed and all the macronutrients calculated for them, so there’s nothing to do but sit back and enjoy!
We currently service 15-20 clients weekly throughout the tri-cities area and are always looking to take on new clients. We just welcomed our third child to the Warrior Strong family (Cayden Ray), so it is even more motivation to better ourselves and be positive role models for our children, as well as help our clients real their goals.
