Blue Yonder, Charleston WV’s honkytonk hootenanny, is headed your way on their Winter Windswept Tour, with a show at The Down Home on Thursday January 31 (7 PM)
John Lilly, the group’s vocalist/chief songwriter, will also be conducting a songwriting workshop at ETSU during the day. Students will be able to buy discount tickets for $8 for the show that night. $12 regular price.
Their live show is something to behold with a kinetic musicianship that flashes echoes of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Willis, Asleep At The Wheel and early 70s Grateful Dead. Band is promoting their latest album Rough and Ready Heart, which No Depression chose as one of the “Best Roots Music Albums of 2018.” Bluegrass Unlimited heralded its “Hard-driving Western Swing filled with lots of tasteful steel guitar.”
A lively acoustic honky-tonk trio of seasoned veterans that deftly navigate classic Country blues, hard-driving Western swing, toe-tapping Rockabilly, and rueful Appalachia with equal aplomb, Blue Yonder features singer John Lilly, two time national flatpicking champion Robert Shafer, and upright bassist Will Carter on the contra dance band, The Contrarians.
“A mix of virtuoso musicianship and original songwriting, Blue Yonder lives where classic country music meets western swing, a honky-tonk beat meets a beautiful ballad, and red hot country jazz guitar licks meet cool blue yodel vocals.” – Mountain Stage
