At Telos Coffee Roasters, we provide freshly roasted specialty coffee to coffee shops at wholesale costs. We also have an online shop where you can purchase our beans directly and we ship all over the nation! ($1 delivery service for Johnson City!) Additionally, we sell home brewing equipment on our website. Our purpose is simple–Promoting progress and flourishing in all areas of life through excellent coffee that doesn’t compromise. We source all of our coffee ethically and sustainably so that the coffee producers can continue to improve their craft and provide roasters with great coffee.
Both Jonathan and I have loved coffee ever since we were little. My (Cari’s) dad taught me how to roast on an old-fashioned popcorn popper and then gifted us that popcorn popper for a wedding gift 5 years ago. We kept roasting as a hobby and a cheap way to make fresh coffee. Pretty soon we started ‘nerding’ out hardcore on coffee and together, we read books, blogs, articles, listened to podcasts, watched roasting classes and even went to roasting school. We are passionate about great, fresh, scientifically roasted, ethically and sustainably sourced coffee. After putting in our time in the corporate world, we took out our retirement, bought our coffee roaster, and established Telos Coffee Roasters
When we decided to start the business, it was a bit of a leap of faith. We knew that there would be costs associated with permits, contractor work, etc… but there came a time when we weren’t sure if the regulations and codes would not sink us entirely (Johnson City is apparently notorious for levying unreasonably prohibitive costs on the prospective small businesses whom they serve). We came close to punting and moving elsewhere.
Totally overshadowing any of the negatives though, are the many positives to this undertaking, and those positives comprise almost entirely of the wonderful people we’ve met along the way because of this business. We knew we would love our coffee, but we could not have foreseen how rewarding the customer service piece would be and how much the community would embrace us. People whom we met at
the farmers market by selling coffee to them have become close friends, loyal customers, and evangelists for our brand. We feel like we’re in the business of positivity and good vibes (which probably are synonyms for coffee).
Along with every customer who says how much they are now enjoying their morning coffee, and along with the people who converted to drinking straight black coffee, so far the event that has made us feel most legitimized as specialty coffee roasters was when Wellington’s Restaurant at Carnegie Hotel gave us the privilege of being their coffee purveyors. Roasting coffee for Wellington’s was a dream from the beginning and we knew we would have to deliver unmatched quality and service. So, of course we were more than thrilled when they finally pulled the trigger and the conversations about when instead of if began. They’ve been brewing our beans for about a month now and the newer challenge to now keep their business is rewarding and fun.
People are first and foremost in all the ways we carry out business. Telos partners with the local missions team at Christ Community Church to forge relationships with existing charities and push new boundaries on how best to protect and uplift the poor, vulnerable and disenfranchised in our community.
