For the fifth August, Friends of Allandale, and partner PEAK, are sponsoring a four concert series which run the gamut of entertainment from comedy to soul to rock n roll and country. Lynda Snook, president of FOA, explains “We are very excited to sponsor our fifth season of free regional concerts at the Allandale amphitheater. This year we begin on August 1st with comedian Rich Vos. This concert contains adult material and is not recommended for children. There is no program on August 8th which is the city’s final downtown concert. Vos is followed on August 15th by Atlanta soul singer Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics. August 22 brings together local legends Benny Wilson and Ivey Road. We will complete our season with Winston Salem’s Big Daddy Love. It’s the most exciting line-up we have had so far.” In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Picnic Pavilion.
PEAK president Lindsay Powers elaborates, “This is our second year in partnership with Friends of Allandale. The series brings exciting comedy and music at the bucolic Allandale campus, and PEAK handles the marketing and social media. Local creative talents, art director Ashley May King and multi-media producer Ryan Shipley, donate their innovative talents as PEAK members to market the series in advertising and social media.”
This August the amphitheater will be open at 6 p.m. when food trucks will sell picnic friendly entrees. Because the crowds have grown, there will be two food trucks along with a desert truck and beer sold by Bays Mountain Brewing Company. They will be open for business at 6 p.m. “You are also welcome to bring your own picnic and beverage” according to Allandale curator Rod Gemayel. The music begins at 7 p.m.
For the first time, we will have drawings at each week’s intermission and gifts are being donated by Cattails Golf Course, Rush Street, Blakey-Mitchell and Allandale Package Store (you must be 21 to win this one), and the Diamond Exchange. Registration will be available at each show.
Incoming FOA president, Nina Myers, wanted to thank our community sponsors. She said, “We are grateful to Eastman Credit Union and Visit Kingsport who have been sponsors of our series since the beginning. They are joined this year by Ballad Health, The Blake and Allandale Package Store. Our media sponsors are Kingsport Times News, Johnson City Press and VIPSEEN. For the first time, we also have had a number of concert supporting individuals who donated individually. It’s expensive to put on this series of free concerts for our regional community, but it brings our organizations great joy to see so many families enjoying the beauty of the Allandale campus and the amphitheater.”
