Free event with Ashley Davis, author of “A Life through Letters” to include a reading and discussion
The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to host a special book event featuring lifelong North Carolina resident and author Ashley Davis at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at The Gallery at Flat Rock. Ashley’s book, titled “A Life through Letters,” chronicles the life of his own father, a minister and missionary, in the many letters he wrote over his lifetime. “A Life through Letters”was aptly released on National Letter Writing Day, in December 2016. What was initially a desire to honor his father, whose letters are collected in the book, has evolved into a call to return to communication via paper and pen and stamp. “I’ve discovered a bit of a subculture connected to letter writing,” says Ashley of promoting the book, which has included presenting a TEDx talk. “It’s been refreshing to see this resurgence out there and people who want to see the book succeed.”
“I knew by that feedback that the letters could be more than just a family treasure. I realized they were something that I wanted to share with the world,” he says. “Also, my father’s dream was to publish his letters as his memoir in letter form. So, completing the book became a passion project for me to complete in honor of my father. “The reception of the book is a validation of my father‘s life, as well as how I’ve tried to live mine based on the things I’ve learned from him.”
This event is free and open to the public and will start at 5:30 p.m. on August 1 and will include the author reading from his book as well as a discussion. Copies of “A Life through Letters” are now available at the Gallery.
