-“It Chapter Two”– (September 6th). As if the fist “It” movie didn’t scare us enough, the trailer for this follow up is over-the-top creepy. The film, based on Stephen King’s novel, picks up 27 years after the first film, and all I will say is the terrifying clown is back. I dare you to watch the preview in the dark. Alone.
-“Freaks”– (September 13th). This film is described as sci-fi noir, and has been getting praise at film festivals. The odd premise involves a father keeping his daughter locked in their house to keep her safe from the supposed “freaks” in the outside world. The daughter eventually breaks free of her home and…watch the preview.
-“Downton Abbey”– (September 20th). Fans of the television series, like me, are thrilled to see the British Crawley family hit the big screen. The plot involves a visit by the King and Queen to Downton. I’m sure the film will feature all the aspects fans enjoyed for the series which ran on PBS in the U.S. I can’t wait to hear more bon mots from the Crawleys, especially from The Dowager Lady Grantham.
-“Ad Astra”– (September 20th). Movie fans will have to choose between the Crawleys and Brad Pitt on September 20th. Pitt is featured in the new sci-fi drama that has been shrouded in mystery. The premise has Brad Pitt’s character traveling on a space mission to unravel the details of his astronaut father who disappeared on a space mission twenty years earlier. The survival of Earth is also part of the story. This film sound extremely intriguing.
-“Abominable”– (September 27th). The kids and the young at heart can’t be left off the list as this animated film is the story of a group of city kids who find a magical Yeti and help him return to his home in the Himalayas. This film should prove to be a good one for families between all the fall activities. After all, who doesn’t like a good Yeti?
-“Joker”– (October 3rd). Batman’s main villain gets his own film, a very dark “R” rated one, and stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. The film has been getting huge buzz from film festivals, and is even getting Oscar mentions. Fans of the Joker know anyone who plays the role is judged by the previous actor in the role, so it will be interesting to see Joaquin’s take, after Heath Ledger’s Oscar winning Joker, and the controversial portrayal by Jared Leto in “Suicide Squad.”
-“Gemini Man”– (October 9th)- If you have seen the trailer for this film you know older Will Smith fights a younger Will Smith in this sci-fi thriller from director Ang Lee. Smith plays an elite assassin who wants to retire but is suddenly being targeted by a young operative who can predict his every move. That’s because…I’ll leave it at that. This film should prove to be a blast in more ways than one.
-“Maleficent” Mistress Of Evil”– (October 16th). This fantasy adventure picks up several years after the hit film “Maleficent”, in which fans learned what drove the villain to cruse the baby Princess Aurora, and later come to love her like a daughter. The sequel continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and Aurora as they face new adversaries.
-“Terminator: Dark Fate”– (October 23rd). The latest film in the long-lived “Terminator” series, brings back fan favorite Linda Hamilton, along with Edward Furlong and the original Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just having that trio back has sent fans into a frenzy, and this film could be the top hit of the autumn. What’s more fun than running from robots?
- “Five Nights at Freddy’s”– (October 31st). This one is for fans of the video game and Halloween night at the movies. If you are not familiar with the game, it involves a popular pizza restaurant, similar to Chuck-E-Cheese, and centers on a group of people trapped inside who discover an animatronic animal who is part of the house band comes to life at night and kills people. Eek! I will never look at Chuck-E-Cheese the same way again.
There you have just a few highlights of the upcoming Autumn movie season to enjoy at local theaters. I given you a few tips, so know it’s up to you to pick your favorites.
