The Ketamine Center of East Tennessee
New hope is available in Johnson City, for those with severe depression and several other serious mental health conditions. According to Dr. Richard Jackson, psychiatrist at the Ketamine Center of East Tennessee, “For treatment-resistant depression, no new medications have been approved which are any more effective than what was available in 1957.”
Ketamine is an anesthetic drug which was developed in the 1960s. It remains widely used in hospitals worldwide. More recently, it has been found to be highly effective for severe depression, even when other medications have failed. Ketamine is also very effective for a variety of related conditions, including anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Ketamine often rapidly reduces suicidal thoughts, and it helps relieve some forms of chronic pain.
For these conditions, ketamine is given slowly, in low doses, through a vein. Treatments last for about 45 minutes, and the patient remains awake. Treatments are done in our office, under Dr. Jackson's supervision. The patient may go home a few minutes after the treatment, but may not drive until the following day.
Improvement after ketamine is often rapid, sometimes after a single treatment. Other patients respond more slowly, and a series of treatments are recommended for best results. Most patients experience no side effects between treatments.
Dr. Jackson is a board certified psychiatrist, who has practiced for 35 years. He has extensive experience in treatment of a wide variety of difficult and treatment-resistant conditions. He has provided ketamine therapy for 4 years. As part of the treatment, Dr. Jackson evaluates the whole person, and attempts to identify any other factors which may be contributing to the person's symptoms, in order to achieve the best results.
The Center is now accepting new patients. Much more information is available on our website, www.Ketamine-TN.com. If you have further questions, or wish to schedule an appointment, call 423-328-7332.
